Competitor study

The project was initiated with an analysis of competing product.

Style references

To find the appropriate visual language of the product 4 different mood boards were created. The 4 styles was “technical”, “futuristic”, “stealth”, and “rescue”. The target visual language was decided somewhere between “technical” and “futuristic”.

Principle solutions

Principle solutions were drafted in an idea workshop with Minoko. The Securus unit is to be operated in harsh environment at sea and contain a high energy light source. That puts some extreme demands on the casing.

In-progress

The form was emerging.

Design proposals

3 design proposals was visualized where the inside package was constructed in CAD. The requirement to separate the light source from the heat sensitive camera settled the decision. The proposal on the far right was taken further in the process.

Modeling

To find the form clay is a fast and simple tool.

Construction

… in Solid Works. Production method: Casting in Aluminum. Parallel with KADABRA´s work with detailing the form Minoko constructed the inside components and mechanisms.

Securus

Better safety at sea
Aptomar was founded in 2005 as a spin-off from the NTNU environment. The business idea is based on ensuring the safety of people and the environment. Securus is a system that combines dynamic positioning technology, camera technology and search light functionality into one product which sets new standards within international maritime health and safety.

KADABRA has carried out two big development projects for Aptomar. The first is the design and development of the

physical product, in collaboration with Minoko. The combined search light and camera unit is stabilized in order to compensate for waves and boat movement. The other project is design of the graphical user interface.

One of the major challenges have been to protect the internal components against weather and temperature variations. From an aesthetic perspective, the goal has been to present the complex technology and robustness in an appealing way.

KADABRA’s responsibilities has permitted Aptomar to present its product and system to investors at a very early point in the process. Visualizations, animation, and prototyping of both the physical product and the graphical user interface has been carried out. Aptomar has in this period grown from 3 employees to 16 employees and is still growing. We are proud to have been part of this process.
