Blanke ark

Comprehensive solution visualized in the gymnastics room of an elementary school.

Voting booth and ballot box

Both voting booth and ballot box are designed as inclusive products, within available height and with adaptations for the visually impaired.

Graphic profile

The profile is simple and consistent, and introduces a touch of solemnity.

Signage program

A comprehensive signage program that guides the voter from outside the building, through the election process, and back outside.

Ballot

The ballot communicates clearly what side is to be folded out.

Voting booth

The booth takes up little space in the election center, and is easy to set up and take down. The stick attached to the curtain makes it easier for everyone to open and close the booth.

Ballot box

The ballot box is inclined to make it easier for everyone to insert the ballot. The inclined surface also creates a proper scene for the symbolic act of giving one’s vote.

Design of all elements in the election process

In cooperation with our partner offices Innovativoli and Blueroom, KADABRA is the winner of the Norwegian Government's Design Competition 2008 – ”Design and Democracy”. “Blanke Ark” is Norwegian for “white pages”, a name coining our comprehensive system for governmental elections including voting booth, ballot box, signage, ballot and graphic profile.

The typical room where elections take place is seldom well suited for important events, neither functionally nor in terms of looks. Sticky gymnastic halls should be transformed from “temples of aged wooden panels” to formal and inviting election centers. The name “Blanke Ark” (eng. white pages) refers to a comprehensive solution with symbolic, functional, and aesthetic qualities.

Symbolically, elections are the occasion to start again from scratch; with a blank sheet of paper. White is not politically charged as color, and represents room for possibilities. Functionally, the big white surfaces are a clear and contrasted signal which is easy to see and understand for everyone. Aesthetically, the use of details in gold, metal and wood in combination with white adds a touch of solemnity.

The process leading to the proposed solution has first and foremost been a user oriented process, based on principles for Design for All. We have done interviews with a physically impaired, a visually impaired, an immigrant, a janitor, and an election volunteer. By understanding the needs of the “elite users”, we have found solutions that are for everyone’s best.
